While many patients understand teeth can be discolored by outside or extrinsic sources, few are aware of intrinsic discoloration. At Woodbridge Dental Services, we provide options to restore the appearance of patients’ smiles, whether their teeth have been stained externally or internally.
We have created this guide to help patients understand how the two different forms of discoloration can occur, and how each can be corrected.
What is the Difference?
Extrinsic staining regularly occurs with the consumption of coffee and other pigmented food and drink, as well as through habits such as smoking. While discoloration caused by outside sources can be difficult to prevent, it can be slowed by consuming darkly colored drinks through a straw and avoiding the consumption of tobacco products.
Staining also occurs from certain medications. The use of tetracycline antibiotics can result in unattractive darkening of the teeth. When taken by a pregnant mother or as a child younger than eight years of age, this antibiotic can affect the development of the teeth. Over-exposure to minerals that are essential to the development of a healthy smile can also lead to discoloration if used in too high concentration, specifically with over-fluoridation. This creates spots of highly mineralized enamel and can be avoided by paying attention to how much fluoride you take in on a regular basis. Infection of the pulp can even be a contributing factor, as it causes the tooth to look darker on the outside.
How to Treat These Kinds of Discoloration
Stains caused external factors are the easiest to treat. Topical whitening treatments are a non-invasive option to brighten teeth by several shades and can be completed both in-office and in the comfort of your own home.
Intrinsic discoloration often requires dental restorations to correct, as it cannot be changed through topical solutions. Bleaching gel will not resolve issues in the dentin, which is beneath the enamel. Veneers are used in these circumstances to cover the face of the tooth in durable, stain-resistant porcelain. These prosthetics adjust the shade of teeth and can create a more appealing shape, when needed.
