At Woodbridge Dental Services, Dr. Jose Lomboy is heavily involved with his local community, which includes sports teams and protecting local athletes’ smiles against damage. As a dentist, Dr. Lomboy treats many patients who have injured their teeth by accident, and while accidents can happen during something as simple as biting into food that chips a tooth, there are far more instances of broken and knocked-out teeth that occur as a result of sports injuries.
What Happens if I Break a Tooth While Playing Sports?
You should be seen immediately in the event of any dental emergency, but especially if the damage to your tooth was severe enough that it could compromise the tooth entirely or if the tooth/teeth were completely knocked out of your smile. With deep fractures or breaks, bacteria can accumulate inside the roots of teeth, requiring a root canal. While the symptoms of this particular issue are not immediately apparent, it’s possible to leave a “dead” or infected tooth for too long, to the point where it must be extracted.
In the event of an avulsed or knocked-out tooth, seeing the dentist right away makes it easier to re-add your natural tooth to your smile. Failing to do this, however, means that patients need to look into their options for replacing teeth with prosthetics. In either case, it’s cheaper and more beneficial to your health to protect your smile in the first place.
Mouth Guards and Preventive Dental Education for Athletes
Dr. Lomboy’s sports dentistry services include supplying custom-made mouth guards that are comfortable to wear while playing any sport. Our goal is to keep your smile safe and healthy at all times, which is why we also take time to give patients essential information about dental health, including habits to avoid, such as chewing tobacco, smoking, or habitually biting on items like pen caps, nails, or even the mouth guards themselves. Our preventive sports dental treatments are available to athletes of any age or level, from high school students to university/junior college players.
We encourage parents of student athletes, or the players themselves, to call our office for more information about getting their custom mouth guard or restoring teeth after a dental injury.
